February 13-17

Welcome!  I am so sorry I was out last Friday.  I completely lost my voice and had a horrible head cold.  I am much better and excited to be back.  Here's what's on the agenda:

TUESDAY: Journal warm-up. Journal warm-up.  Enjoy e.e. cumming's "somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond" poem in honor of Valentine's Day.  Discuss "Just Walk on By".  Read and discuss "I Want a Wife": what is the author's purpose?  How does she build her argument? Discussion questions about your own future, division of household duties, hours you envision that you'll be working in your 20s, 30s.

Due: Read "There is No Unmarked Woman" and answer the questions.

Homework: Please read "American Girl.  How do you grow up healthy in an era of body shaming and anonymous bullying on social media? You fight back." from National Geographic Magazine.  Be ready to discuss.

THURSDAY: Journal warm-up. Quiz. Ideal man/woman activity.  Video "Killing Me Softly" and "spiderweb" style discussion.  View current event articles about new weight/BMI minimums in place for fashion models in France and new Barbie dolls with different body types.

February 6-10

Hello!  Here's what's on the agenda this week:

MONDAY: Journal warm-up. Check in and review Huckleberry Finn so far.  Read Chapter 31 aloud in class.  Read and act out summaries.  Read Chapter the Last.  Discussion about Huckleberry Finn's ending. 

Due: Read Huck Finn 27-29

Homework: Please read "Why Johnny Won't Read" and write your original answers and ideas to the questions at the end of the article.

WEDNESDAY: Journal warm-up.  Discuss "Why Johnny Won't Read".  Read Paul Theroux's "Being a Man" as a class and analyze his evidence, examples, and tone.  In groups, make lists either supporting or refuting his thesis.  Present evidence and examples to the class. 

Due: Please read "Why Johnny Won't Read" and write your original answers and ideas to the questions at the end of the article.

Homework: Please read "Putting Down the Gun"and complete the questions at the end.

FRIDAY: Journal warm-up. Quiz.  Talk about "Putting Down the Gun".  Read "Just Walk on By" and discuss how the author reveals details about himself and his experiences.  Is this still relevant today?

January 30 - February 3

Welcome!  I hope everyone had a good three-day weekend. There certainly is a lot going on these days. 

This week, we will be working on Huckleberry Finn and also looking at The Declaration of Independence as an argument.

TUESDAY: Journal warm-up.  The Declaration of Independence as an argument. Review Huckleberry Finn reading and Huck Finn For and Against assignment.  If time, vocab story rounds.

Due: Please read Chapters 21-23 (page 152 of the library version).  You're about to learn more about the scam artistry of the Duke and the Dauphin - be ready to discuss what Twain is saying about American society/culture and whether or not his satire is relevant today. 

 Read through both articles in the Huckleberry Finn for and Against Assignment.

Homework: Read chapters 24-26 (p.158-180) for Thursday.  The reading will be on the quiz on Thursday with the vocabulary and grammar.

THURSDAY: Journal warm-up.  Quiz.  Go over Huckleberry Finn reading, read aloud in class.  Read essay "Words that Work" and discuss with real-world examples in groups. 

Due: Read chapters 24-26 (p.158-180) for Thursday.  The reading will be on the quiz on Thursday with the vocabulary and grammar.

Homework:  Read Chapters 27-29 of Huckleberry Finn for Monday.

Second Semester is here! January 23-27

Welcome to second semester already!

TUESDAY: Journal warm-up.  Overview of second semester.  Suggest TheWeek.com for current event e-mail of the day.  Pass back final, go over it.  Outline exercise.  Review Huckleberry Finn and read Chapter 19 in class.  Huckleberry Finn group exercise.

Homework:  Read Huckleberry Finn through Chapter 20 (page 136 of the library version).


THURSDAY: Journal warm-up.  Huckleberry Finn for and Against assignment. Notes: satire, read example, view examples.

Finals Week!

The final for English 3 will include the following parts:

Part I. Contains 51 multiple choice questions covering what's on the study guide
Part II. Students will read and annotate two articles with opposing viewpoints on a given prompt.  They will write out the Universal Outline format from memory, and then write their own outline response.  Note: this is not a full essay. 


Here is the schedule:

MONDAY: Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, no school.

TUESDAY: All classes, review day.  We will play review baseball to practice for the first part of the final.

WEDNESDAY:
 8:00- 9:55 - First period's final
10:50 - 12:00 - Second period's final

THURSDAY:  Please bring pencils and other materials to study or a book to read in case you finish early.

 8:00- 9:55 - Fourth period's final - NOTE THAT 4th PERIOD IS FIRST, NOT 3rd.

January 9-13

This is your only five-day week in January.  This week, we'll gear up for our last quiz, review with the Study Guide, and look at two important historical passages: The Declaration of Independence and Martin Luther King Jr.'s I Have a Dream speech.

MONDAY: Journal warm-up.  Finish Rhetorical Analysis terms activity from Thursday on Study Guide.  Time on laptops to read comments on rough drafts of The Grapes of Wrath essays and revise them into final drafts. Drafts are due by Friday night, January 13, at 10:00 p.m.

Due: Read Chapters 17 and 18 of Huckleberry Finn. Be able to access your rough draft of the Grapes essay.

Homework: Handwrite the 9 logical fallacies with definitions next to each on the Study Guide.

Happy New Year!  We have a short week, a regular week, and then finals and the end of first semester already.  I'm looking forward to a great half-year together!

NOTE: If you've fallen behind or have any missing work, you can turn in work for first semester up through January 13 for partial credit.

TUESDAY: Journal warm-up.  Announcements/schedule.  Enjoy classmates' Huck Finn raft projects.  Review Huckleberry Finn reading.  Review fallacies, (show video sample), and add 3 more.  Begin reading Paper Tigers article.

Due: Complete the Huckleberry Finn Raft Project.  Read Huckleberry Finn, Chapters 12-15, page 63-87.

Homework:  Finish reading Paper Tigers article and be ready to discuss your impressions of the article and whether or not you think that college admission based on diversity is a good idea or not.

THURSDAY: Journal warm-up.  Receive vocab sheet for next week - the last quiz of the semester.  Read this critical response to the Paper Tigers article and discuss your impressions. Receive Study Guide, fill in rhetorical analysis terms section.  Begin reading Chapter 17 in class.

Due: Finish reading Paper Tigers article.

Homework: Read Huckleberry Finn, Chapters 17 and 18, pages 88-105. 

Make sure your Grapes essay is accessible from the Internet for Monday's class. We will have time to revise rough drafts and make them into final versions.
