October 29 - November 2


It's the end of October and we've worked hard so far this year. This week, we will enjoy celebrating Halloween with American horror authors, talk about the strategies writers use to build suspense, and enjoy some treats.

TUESDAY (HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION): Journal warm-up. Read an Edgar Allan Poe short story as a whole class. Video - building suspense. If time: Halloween 2-3 minute short films.

October 22 - 26


MONDAY/TUESDAY: Journal warm-up. (4th and 6th - Book banning for and against. 1st and 3rd - Queen Elizabeth's Speech to the Troops at Tilbury.) Notes: irony. View video samples.

Due: Please finish Grapes, Chapter 16 and 17.

Homework:  Please read Grapes, Chapter 18, pages 274-289 for Thursday/Friday. 

Study for the quiz on Thursday/Friday. 

WEDNESDAY: (4th and 6th periods - play preview). Journal warm-up. Current event day: book banning four corner debate.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: (1st and 3rd periods - play preview on Thursday. 4th and 6th - shorter classes on Friday due to Pen football game.)  Journal warm-up. Quiz covering Vocabulary List #7, grammar. Act out scene from Grapes, Chapter 18, page 290-300.

DuePlease read Grapes, Chapter 18, pages 274-289 for Thursday/Friday. 

Homework: Please finish Grapes, Chapter 18 and Chapter 19 for next class. While reading Chapter 19, think about all of the rhetorical strategies Steinbeck is utilizing to forward his larger argument.

October 15 - 19

Welcome! This week, we'll finish the full rough draft of the Kelley essay. Some students are already done with it and will just be checking their conclusions before turning in, and some still have the final paragraphs to type out.

NOTE: if you're finished with the Kelley essay, and would like more practice and comments about rhetorical analysis essays in general, you're welcome to upload the full rough draft of the Kelley prompt, and then work on a new prompt to submit for the final draft link in Turnitin.com. See me and I can give you a new prompt, then give you feedback on an outline and rough draft as well. 

MONDAY/TUESDAY: Journal warm-up. Go over Grapes reading. Conclusions - how to write them, dos and don'ts.  Conclusion rewrite activity in small groups. Time to work on laptops on full rough draft.

Due: Read Grapes, Chapter 16: pages 222-247.

Homework: Please finish the full rough draft of the Kelley essay and post to Turnitin.com before your Thursday/Friday class begins.  It should be in full paragraphs (5+ sentences), and each rhetorical device should have explanations in full sentences, with a minimum of two examples for each.

WEDNESDAY: (1st and 3rd only) Multiple choice practice work, Grapes reading.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Journal warm-up. Quiz covering Vocab list #6, grammar, and Grapes reading. Notes: diction (word choice). Activity with diction. Grapes reading aloud and acting out, beginning with Chapter 16, page 247.

Due: Full rough draft essay response to Kelley prompt uploaded to Turnitin.com before the class period begins.

Homework: Please finish Grapes, the rest of Chapter 16 and 17.

October 8 - 12

This is the week of the PSAT! We will have some fun (okay, teacher version of fun!) on Wednesday after the exam with an interactive vocabulary game instead of Current Event Day.

MONDAY/TUESDAY: Journal warm-up. Tone/rhetorical questions notes. Go over Grapes, Chapter 14. Receive outlines back. Time in class to type rough drafts in sentences for a full (very rough) essay.

DuePlease read the rest of Grapes, Chapter 13 and Chapter 14 for next class. As you read Chapter 14, look for rhetorical devices/strategies that Steinbeck is using to make his overall argument. Be ready to share 2-3 of them.

Homework: Please continue working on the full, rough draft of the essay response to the Kelley prompt. Make sure you can access it electronically for Thursday/Friday.

Study for the quiz on Thursday/Friday covering Vocab List #5, grammar, and Grapes reading.

October 1 - October 5


MONDAY/TUESDAY: Journal warm-up. Go over Kelley prompt annotations, outline process. Turn in outlines. Tone definition, tone group exercises.

Due: Please write a full, original outline on a separate piece of paper for the Kelley prompt. Short phrases are fine.  Use the rhetorical analysis outline format and fill in your own responses to each section. Bring this paper for next class; we will go over it in class, then we'll turn these in.

Homework: Please read Chapter 13 of Grapes, p. 167-187.

WEDNESDAY: Journal warm-up. Current event day - read and annotate two opposing viewpoints. Discuss and debate, vote. Outline the majority opinion in a synthesis/ACT-style outline response based on the discussion.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Journal warm-up. Quiz covering Tone Vocabulary list. Multiple choice practice. Read Grapes, pages 187 until the end of Chapter 13.
