February 24 - 28

Welcome! Here's what's on the agenda for this week. Because of Junior Scheduling, A Day and B Day have slightly different schedules until the end of the week.

NOTE: A Day will have its Vocab #14/reading quiz this week on Tuesday, and 6th period won't have a quiz. 

MONDAY (6th period only): Attendance. Junior scheduling.

DuePlease read "The Gig Economy is Coming for Your Job" plus the NY Times Comments Section, page 18-24 of the English 3 The Great Gatsby Expansion Reading Packet.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Journal warm-up about Gig Economy article. Finish Gatsby movie. Begin next argument outline: defend, challenge, or qualify the statement "The Great Gatsby is relevant to modern times and should be included in the curriculum."

Due: Please read, "Excerpts from On the Clock" pages 1-9 of the Gatsby Expansion Packet.

Homework: 1st and 2nd period: for Monday, please have a good draft of an original outline and bring it back with you for next class. Use the "Universal Outline" format as a guide, and write original reasons and phrases that answer the prompt in each space in the outline.

Prompt: "The Great Gatsby is relevant to modern times and should be included in the curriculum." Please defend, challenge, or qualify the statement in an argument essay OUTLINE.

Hint: the Gatsby reading and the reading so far in the packet will help with this.

6th period: Please read pages 10 - 17 in the Gatsby Extension Pack about Homelessness. We will have a roundtable discussion about the issue on Tuesday.

February 17 - 21

Because of the timing of junior scheduling for A day and B day, Vocab/reading quiz #14 will take place Thursday for 6th period, and next week for periods 1 and 2.

Please be sure to read and/or listen to the final Gatsby chapters, because this information will be on the quizzes and needed for class discussion.

MONDAY: Presidents' Day holiday, no school.

TUESDAY (6th period only): Journal warm-up. Gatsby character exercise in groups. Fallacies in argument, #4-6. Begin reading Chapter 9 of Gatsby.

Due: Read Chapter 8 of Gatsby. Turn in journal.

Homework: Study for quiz on Thursday.  

Finish Chapter 9 of Gatsby, (finish the book).

February 10 - 14

This week, we`ll continue with the Argument Unit and The Great Gatsby. Here`s what`s on the agenda:

MONDAY/TUESDAY: Journal warm-up. Finish outline of College Prompt in class and turn it in. Begin reading and acting out Chapter 7, (a very dramatic chapter), in class.

Due: Please read Chapter 6 of The Great Gatsby.

Please bring the outline we worked on in class with you. You`ll turn this in during class today.

Homework: Please finish reading Chapter 7 of The Great Gatsby.

Please have journals ready to turn in on Thursday/Friday.  

Study for Vocab/grammar/reading quiz on Thursday/Friday.

WEDNESDAY: Journal warm-up. Current event day - read and annotate two opposing viewpoints. Discuss and debate, vote. Outline the majority opinion in a synthesis/ACT-style outline response based on the discussion. 

Due: n/a

Homework: Same as Monday.
 
THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Journal warm-up. Quiz covering Vocabulary #13, grammar, and reading.  Valentine`s Day celebration, English-style for 6th period. (Periods 1 and 2 were very badly behaved when a substitute was in class, and the Valentine's Day celebration was cancelled for them.) Notes: fallacies, learn first 3, group exercise with fallacies, (except for 2nd period).

Due: Read Chapter 7 of Gatsby.

Journals in bin at the end of the class period.

Homework: Please finish reading Chapter 8 of Gatsby.

2nd period only - please click on the Fallacies PowerPoint at the right-hand sidebar and read and study the first 3. You'll need to know them for next class.

February 3 - 7

I appreciate the opportunity to read Gatsby with you, and am enjoying your reading and acting out some of the scenes in class. This week, we'll continue with Gatsby and also start pulling together all of the notes we've been taking for the Argument Writing Unit, and responding with outlines. Students will be comfortable reading and planning this type of prompt, and will write three outline responses, then choose one to write as their first essay in the argument style.

MONDAY/TUESDAY: Journal warm-up. Collect Gatsby nomination forms. Read several perspectives in response to the prompt, "Should four-year public colleges be free?" Four-corner debate. Write an outline response (taking whichever position you decide after debating) and turn it in.

Due: Finish reading Chapter Five of The Great Gatsby

Homework: Read and annotate through some of the articles in the Should Four-year Public College Be Free? Packet. Be sure to mark any good reasons/evidence/examples so you can use them in class when we outline this prompt on Thursday/Friday. 

Study for the vocab/grammar/reading quiz on Thursday/Friday. 
 
WEDNESDAY: Journal warm-up: fighting poverty. Read and act out Chapter six with discussion questions. Go over argument outline assignment.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Journal warm-up. Quiz covering Vocab List #12, grammar, reading. Hand out next vocab sheet. Referring to the Should Four-year Public College Be Free? Packet and the outline format handed out in class, choose an answer to the prompt and write an outline. Using the Gatsby nomination forms, vote for a Gatsby cast for each class. Notes: fallacies in argument, the first three.
