September 24-28

It's the last week of September already! This week, we'll go through another prompt in detail and go through the steps of writing a full essay response.


MONDAY/TUESDAY: Journal warm-up. Reading Grapes with drawing activity. Imagery notes, samples. Imagery exercise. Receive Florence Kelley prompt.


Due: Please read the rest of Grapes, Chapter 10.

Homework: Please read and annotate the Florence Kelley speech prompt for Thursday/Friday. Make sure to mark in the margins with little phrases each time you identify a rhetorical strategy (logos, ethos, pathos, figurative language, imagery, etc.)
 
WEDNESDAY: (4th and 6th only) Journal warm-up. Current event day - read and annotate two opposing viewpoints about anthem protests. Discuss and debate, vote.

Due: n/a

Homework: (Same as Monday.)

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Journal warm-up. Quiz covering Vocab #4 and reading. Receive Tone Vocabulary sheet for next week, and Rhetorical Analysis outline format guide. Go over Kelley prompt annotations (bring this for check-off) and outline format.  Fill out PSAT forms. If time, we'll read and act out the first part of Grapes, Chapter 13.

Homework: Please write a full, original outline on a separate piece of paper for the Kelley prompt. Short phrases are fine.  Use the rhetorical analysis outline format and fill in your own responses to each section. Bring this paper for next class; we will go over it in class, then we'll turn these in.

September 17 - 21

It's the week of back-to-school night! Be sure to invite parents and guardians to come to PVHS on Thursday night, September 20 to walk through your school schedule. The next day, Friday, September 21, is a special minimum-day schedule and classes end at noon.

Also, Cammie McGovern, author of A Step Toward Falling, will be live via Skype in the library at 7:50 this Wednesday morning. I'm offering 2 extra credit points for those who attend with one prepared, high quality question for the author. (This works out to about half a percent.)

Here's the agenda for the week:

MONDAY/TUESDAY: Journal warm-up. Review the types of writing and essays we'll do this year. Go through an SAT prompt and look for logos, ethos, and pathos in the prompt.  Whole class: outline a response.  Read Grapes, Chapter 9 in class with group activity using logos, ethos, and pathos.

Due: Setting the Stage assignment.

Homework: Please finish Chapter 9 for Thursday/Friday.


WEDNESDAY: Journal warm-up. Current event day - read and annotate two opposing viewpoints about the anthem protests. Timed partner discussions. Outline the majority opinion in a synthesis/ACT-style outline response

Due: (Same as Monday.)

Homework: Have journal ready to turn in at the end of the period on Friday in the classroom bin. 

THURSDAY: (4th and 6th only) Journal warm-up. Quiz covering Vocabulary List #3, grammar, and reading. Begin reading and acting out Chapter 10 of Grapes of Wrath.

Due: Grapes, Chapter 9.

Homework: Please read the rest of Chapter 10 for next class.

FRIDAY: (1st and 3rd only - minimum day) Journal warm-up. Quiz covering Vocabulary List #3, grammar, and reading. Begin reading and acting out Chapter 10 of Grapes of Wrath.

Due: Grapes, Chapter 9, journal in classroom bin by the end of the period.

Homework: Please read the rest of Chapter 10 for next class.

MONDAY/TUESDAY: Journal warm-up. Grapes of Wrath reading/activity. Notes: logos, ethos, pathos. Read samples of logos, ethos, pathos. Whole class: view video clips using logos, ethos, and pathos and discuss.

Due: Chapters 5 and 6 of Grapes of Wrath.

Homework: Please read Chapter 8 of Grapes for Thursday/Friday.

Continue work on Setting the Stage assignment for next week (due 9/17 and 9/18).

WEDNESDAY: Journal warm-up. Current event day - read and annotate two opposing viewpoints. Discuss and debate, vote. Outline the majority opinion in a synthesis/ACT-style outline response based on the discussion.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Journal warm-up. Quiz covering Vocabulary list #2 and reading.  Review logos, ethos, pathos notes. Group activity practicing logos, ethos, pathos.
