November 26 - 30


Welcome back! I hope you had a terrific Thanksgiving holiday. We have four fabulous weeks to dig into the Argument Unit, finish The Grapes of Wrath, and enjoy several debates and discussions along the way.

MONDAY/TUESDAY: Journal warm-up. Argument notes: graph of possible positions to take, argument outline format. Go through argument essay outline example as a whole class. Music inspired by The Grapes of Wrath presentation with lyrics, analysis. Intro to excerpts from Nickel and Dimed included in the Expansion Pack (see sidebar of this website). We are reading about the modern-day working poor to prepare for a discussion/debate on Thursday/Friday.  

Due: Read Grapes, Chapters 22 - 25

Homework: Please read and annotate the Nickel and Dimed excerpts in the Expansion Pack, pages 9-25. Please interact with the text, and comment in the margins.

WEDNESDAY: (UPDATED DUE TO MS. M ABSENCE - Periods 1 and 3) Journal warm-up. Please read The Grapes of Wrath, Chapter 26, pages 478-514. Finish Expansion Pack reading, pages 9-25.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Journal warm-up. Quiz covering Vocabulary List #10, grammar, reading. Argument Notes: types of evidence and examples. Discuss and debate the universal basic income proposal, write an outline response.

MONDAY: Veteran's Day, no school.


TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY: Journal warm-up. Intro to argument. Grapes Character Exercise in groups. Read Grapes, Chapter 22 in class.

Due: Please finish Chapter 20, 21, and read Chapter 22 through page 395. Note how Tom, Uncle John, and Connie deal with the adversity they face during these pages

Homework: Please read Grapes, Chapter 22, through page 425.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Journal warm-up. Quiz covering Vocab #9, grammar, reading. Music inspired by The Grapes of Wrath. Current event.

Due: Grapes, Chapter 22 through page 425.

Homework: Please finish Chapters 22, 23, 24, and 25 of The Grapes of Wrath

Ask your parents, guardians, friends, and relatives about their health care coverage and what they think about the issue. (We'll discuss and debate this after Thanksgiving.)

November 5 - November 9

It's November! This month, we'll start the Argument Unit, enjoy some discussion and debate that corresponds with The Grapes of Wrath, and finish the novel. (We'll also enjoy the November holidays along the way.) Here's what's on the agenda for this week:


MONDAY (4th and 6th): Journal warm-up. Discuss "Dumpster Diving". Become a City Council and review a possible solution for homelessness that San Pedro debated and voted on. 



Due: Finish "Dumpster Diving" from the English 3 Expansion Pack, and come to class with your annotated packet. 

Continue work on the final draft of the Kelley essay, which will be due by the end of the week.

Homework: Finish the Kelley essay and upload to Turnitin.com before class on Friday.

Please read Grapes, Chapter 20, page 327 - 347 for Friday.

TUESDAY (1st and 3rd): Journal warm-up. Time to read Grapes, Chapter 20, page 327 - 347 and work on laptops.  Upload the final draft of the Kelley rhetorical analysis essay to Turnitin.com before Thursday's class begins. Please be sure to hit "confirm" on Turnitin.com and check to make sure you got the confirmation e-mail.

Due: Finish "Dumpster Diving" from the English 3 Expansion Pack, and come to class with your annotated packet.
